Tanzanian Leader ‘Cracks Down’ on Homosexuality

OCTOBER 30-- Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda, leader of Dar es Salaam, the most populated city in Tanzania, is ordering mass arrests of homosexuals living in the region.

On October 30th, Makonda said that he’s ordered a surveillance squad to monitor gay and lesbian people in the city, which has a population of more than 4 million citizens.

The 17-member squad will use social media as a means to identify and arrest gay, lesbian or transgender people, according to Reuters.

Makonda tweeted that he’s received the names of more than 100 suspected gay people in the region from the public, and warned that he plans to arrest the offenders.

Since gay sex is illegal in Tanzania, it is punishable by long prison sentences, according to the State Department.

A travel advisory was issued by US officials in January warning travelers to be careful if they are visiting in the East African county due to crime, terrorism, and targeting of [LGBTI — lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex] persons.”

Makonda’s announcement of a crackdown has ignited a deeper fear among LGBTI citizens in the region. A 24-year-old man named Nathan told Reuters that, as of Monday, he’s “been moving here and there,” and added he’s “always looking over [his] shoulder in case they coming for me.”

He added: “There’s so much tension within the gay community at the moment. Not just in Dar, but all over the country. We are really scared. We don’t know what to do and where to go.”

The country began to see an “unprecedented crackdown on the rights of LGBT people and their advocates” in mid-2016, according to the nongovernmental organization Human Rights Watch.

The president of Tanzania, John Magufuli, who was elected in 2015, was quoted in July stating that “even cows disapprove” of homosexuality.

Breakfast Meat Beatdown

NOVEMBER 15-- According to police reports, a McDonald’s cook tried to shove hot crispy bacon in her manager’s face during a confrontation that ultimately resulted in an assault and battery charge being filed against the employee.

Cops say that it went all the way down at a McDonald’s in Bluffton, South Carolina after manager Tequila Cohen, 33, asked one of the cooks, Josefina Jimenez, to stop eating up all the bacon while she was cooking.

When Jimenez continued eating the bacon after being advised several times to stop, Cohen filed a complaint with the company’s general manager.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Jimenez was infuriated when Cohen egged on the November 9 bacon beef. The employee allegedly backed Cohen into the corner and tried to shove hot, crispy bacon down her throat.

Investigators charge that when Cohen tried pushing away from Jimenez, the employee struck Cohen in the face, as she held bacon in her hand. Jimenez also allegedly tossed a cup of an unknown substance at Cohen. After the women were finally separated by a third McDonald’s employee, Cohen called 911.

A police review of surveillance footage supported Cohen’s account of the confrontation. Jimenez had left the McDonald’s by the time deputies arrived at the restaurant, which is about 20 miles from Savannah, Georgia.

A judge issued an arrest warrant charging Jimenez with assault and battery. Beaufort County jail records indicate that Jimenez has yet to be booked on the charge. She is to be considered armed with hot bacon and extremely dangerous.

Cracking Up

OCTOBER 30-- An Indiana man contacted police to file a complaint against his crack dealer.

According to the Evansville Police Department, Kenneth Dewayne Woods, 62, walked into the police records department and told them that he bought some crack cocaine over a period of time on credit from a female dealer and her boyfriend.

Woods told police that he has an outstanding $400 balance with the pair.

According to Woods, because of his unpaid narcotics bill, his dealers are now threatening to run him out of town, vandalize his car, and shoot him. Additionally, due to interest, the dealers now insist that Woods owes them $500.

Woods said the assorted threats occurred in early October.

Sausage Party

OCTOBER 11-- A 22-year-old Florida man was arrested for allegedly throwing sausages at his mother with inside the kitchen of their Bradenton home.

According to police reports, Callijas-Gasperin battered his 41-year-old mother after asking her to make him some food around 8 PM. The victim agreed to prepare a meal, then asked her son to give her a few minutes because she was busy with another task.

The unemployed Callijas-Gasperin became infuriated when asked to wait. Callijas-Gasperin threw the remaining sausages at his mother. One of the sausages struck her in the right eye. He also allegedly pushed the victim backwards and placed his hands around her neck. Luckily, his grasp was not strong enough to restrict her breathing.

During police questioning, Callijas-Gasperin claimed that his mother walked up and bumped him while he was eating in the kitchen. The defendant stated that he got mad, so he threw the remaining sausages at her. Callijas-Gasperin insisted that he had done nothing wrong, adding that he would not have tossed the sausages if his mother would have apologized to him.

Callijas-Gasperin was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and booked into the county jail. Upon his release, Callijas-Gasperin was ordered to stay at least 500 feet away from his mother.

Callijas-Gasperin was arrested earlier this year following a fight with his stepfather, after he found Callijas-Gasperin smoking pot on his front porch. Callijas-Gasperin pleaded no contest to misdemeanor marijuana possession and resisting police charges.
