Adult Game Night Edition: Taboo!

What’s up game fans! I’m back with another edition of our Friction Game Review. In honor of the many upcoming Halloween parties, I’ve decided to review a game that my in laws and I play during every game night party: Taboo!

Taboo is a classic Hasbro card game that’s been around since 1989. Your mission is to get your teammates to guess the word you are describing, but there’s a catch! Underneath the mystery word, contains a list of other words you’re not allowed to say while describing the mystery word. The teams are determined by the numbers 1 and 2. We like to go around the room and start counting starting at one. The first person you count is a 1, the next is a 2, and then it starts over. Next, we get the cards and the timer ready. Everyone on your team has to take a turn describing words on each card. If a 1 goes first, a 2 must watch the card as the 1 describes the word to his or her team. As you play you should try to give creative clues, listen for your opponents to say the taboo words, and you are allowed to pass when a card stumps you. Each card you get right is a point for your team, and all of the cards your skip, or cards on which you said words that were taboo are a point for the other team. It’s also important to point out that the opposing team should watch the timer during the other teams turn, when time is up, time is up! Some people like to take advantage if they know you aren’t paying attention and rack up illegal points.

We also put a little spin on the ending. Whichever team loses, each of their team members has to take a shot of liquor while members of the other team bask in all of their glory. It’s a hell of a way to end the game.

To be honest, this is the most enjoyable game that we play during game night. Drunk Uno is cool too, but there’s something about a card game that makes you think, makes you celebrate and occasionally makes you argue with a family member and repeatedly accuse them of cheating. I highly recommend this game to you if you plan on having a kickback for Halloween. Believe me, you and whoever else chooses to play are going to have the time of your lives.
