Friction Game Review: Def Jam Icon - by Ericca M.

What’s up game fans? We are back with another edition of the Friction Game Review. As always, y’all know I like to give you guys honest reviews and throw in my honest opinions.

This month, I chose to go back to a video game that has always brought me a lot of joy. Def Jam Icon is a game that encompasses my favorite things, arcade style fighting matches, hip-hop music, and life simulation.

Icon was released on the Playstation 3 and XBox 360 back in 2007. This was seriously my favorite game around that time. I was actually playing it on the 360. The concept of the game is your character literally fights his way to the top and slowly but surely becomes a hip-hop icon. Your character starts out as an average joe and as he successfully completes matches, he is awarded more money, a new lavish home, and eventually works his way up to icon status.

The gameplay is dope. Let’s start with the soundtrack, which features songs by Mike Jones, E-40, Young Jeezy, Paul Wall...the list goes on. This is definitely one of those games where I encourage hooking your TV up to a sound bar or stereo speakers because you’ll be nodding your head while you’re busy kicking ass.

You go up against various Def Jam artists in up close brawling matches. My favorite character to go up against has always been Mike Jones. His fighting style is very aggressive and he shows off a lot. The Game’s character comes in a close second, largely due to the fact that you get to hear One Blood while you’re fighting against him. He’s also a very challenging character so you’re sure to go up against him a few times before you actually beat him.

Another enjoyable aspect of the game is the character customization. The flyest of clothing, shoes and jewelry is available for you to really trick out your player before battle. You choose every feature from the skin complexion, to their eye color, hair cut, and bone structure. You also have the ability to choose what fighting style your character has and train him up properly before he fights.

Seriously guys, if you’re a hip-hop fan, fighting games, or even someone who is a fan of the culture in general, you will enjoy this game. It’s packed full of hit records, action, and the storyline keeps you entertained. I recommend Def Jam Icon to anybody who is in the mood play an oldy but goody.
