Video Game Review - April 2018 - by Ericca M.

What’s up game fans? I’m back with yet another Friction Game Review! To all of y’all who have been rocking with me since I started doing these reviews, I thank you and appreciate you a lot.

At the beginning of the year I let y’all know that I’d be switching the format of these reviews ever so often, especially when a new and exciting game is introduced to me.

So let’s talk about Black Card Revoked. It was released in July 2015 and has gained a lot of popularity over the past two and half years. The game is described as a fun and nostalgic celebration of American black popular culture. One great thing about this game is that you can play it with your Mom, Aunts, and Grandma’s without feeling like you’re going to offend them in some form or fashion.

Another great thing about the game is that it’s geared towards the African-American community. Finally, a game that represents us that only we, (and a few others that may have been raised around
Latesha Williams, Creator of Black Card Revoked
African-Americans) truly understand.

The game combines popular black culture events with situations that typically only occur within the black family. It’s humorous and it’s super competitive, especially if you’re like me and think you know everything about Black Television and Black Culture.

Black Card Revoked plays up to 6 people and includes 81 question cards as well as 24 response cards. First, you have to distribute the black answer cards to all players. Everyone should have four answer cards marked A,B,C,D in their hand. Then, each participant will take a turn hosting and reading the question game cards. The game host will read the cards out loud, first announcing if the card is correct answer or majority wins. After reading the question, everybody has 6-10 seconds to answer.

After which, the person hosting the game will tell everybody to flip their cards to reveal their answer choices.

How do you know who wins? ‘Correct Answer’ cards have the correct answer highlighted in black, however, if an answer is selected by the majority of players (4 Players, 3 say ‘A’) then that’s the answer that wins, no matter what the correct answer printed on the card is. If there is a tie, the game host chooses which answer wins.

A few samples of the questions and answers you might see during game play:

Q: When you grandmother tells you to “rench” off this spoon, what tool do you need to complete this job?

A) Screwdriver
B)  Hammer
C) Pliers
D) Water

People who are familiar with black popular culture will know that the correct answer is D. Some of our grandmothers are from the south and they have a different way of pronouncing certain words. It’s humorous because a lot of us have heard this particular phrase more than once or twice.

I definitely recommend this game for mixed crowds. It’s important to note that it is completely okay for people of all races to play this game, who knows, it might help people of other races get to know their African-American friends a bit better.

As for African-Americans who have not had a chance to give this game a try, I encourage you to do so. It’s fun and it can get very competitive, so you’re sure to enjoy it for hours.
