Video Game Review - by Ericca M.

     Until Dawn

Choice based games are definitely the new flavor of the decade as far as interactive gaming in concerned. There’s nothing cooler than being able to change the story as you go based on the smart or stupid decisions that you make. It makes gaming even more similar to real life.

A perfect example of these kind of games is Until Dawn. Until Dawn is certainly a hidden gem. It was one of those downloadable games that I came across when I was randomly searching through the Playstation Network for a new horror game. I came across the trailer and it looked awesome. I’ve always been a fan of survival games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, etc., so I knew it’d be the perfect fit for my collection.

Until Dawn is an interactive drama survival horror adventure video game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. It was originally released worldwide in August 2015 so I was a little late in the game when I finally got a chance to play it.

Picture this, a group of eight teenagers decide to take a trip to a cabin in the woods for some winter-time fun, hook-ups and other shenanigans. As you can imagine, it’s all well and good until members of the group begin to disappear and they realize that a serial killer is stalking them. In true horror movie fashion, they managed to scare me so much that I had to pass the controller to my sister in law a couple of times.

What really made this game epic is that there was a major fucking plot twist revealed. As I continued to make decisions that either killed or saved one of my friends, it began to unravel. The killer that had been stalking them was revealed to be Josh, the older brother of the twins that had gone missing in the woods the year prior. He was seeking revenge against the group because he felt as if they were at fault for taunting one of them, causing her to run off, and of course causing the other twin to run off behind her.

But oddly enough, Josh revealed that he hadn’t killed anyone. Despite that fact, members of the group were still coming up missing and ultimately found dead.

As it turns out, there is a group of skinwalkers, demons, whatever you want to call them, living under the cabin in the mines. They would find their way above ground to feed and then return to their lair underneath the property. Creepy, right?

To say that playing this game was horrifying is an understatement. I was legitimately fucking scared to make any decisions for fear that the butterflies would scatter across the screen (which was a sign that I made a terrible decision).

So there it is, guys. Another honest game review from an avid gamer who likes to say fuck the techs and specs and get right down to the nitty gritty, aka, the overall experience.
